Adapted Physical Educator of the Year 

ELIGIBILITY

For the purpose of this award, an adapted physical educator is defined as an individual who has major responsibility for teaching adapted physical education with early childhood age, elementary, or secondary levels or any combination of the above for a specific school system and is a member of OAHPERD/APAC/SHAPE America.

  • Possesses a valid teaching certificate in adapted physical education (nominee with this certificate would have first priority)
  • Has a minimum of five years teaching experience in adapted physical education in Ohio, and is presently employed as an adapted PE teacher.
  • Serves as a positive role model epitomizing personal health, fitness, enjoyment of activities, sportsmanship and sensitivity to the needs of students.
  • Demonstrates exceptional talent in designing, modifying and adaptation of the learning environment and activities which contribute to and support the successful inclusion of special needs students into the regular PE classroom to the fullest degree possible.
  • Successfully involved in extending adapted PE, and recreation skills, knowledge, and values beyond the classroom such as participation in Special Olympics, Wheelchair Games, parental involvement, and encouraging their full potential within and outside of the school walls.
  • Fosters student achievement of independent living and self control, through the media of sport, physical education and recreation.
  • Has made a significant contribution to the field of adapted physical education by assuming leadership responsibilities, making presentations and publishing educational materials at the local, state and/or national levels.
  • Must exemplify high moral character and personal integrity and assume responsibility for his/her professional growth.

DIRECTIONS

  3. Award criteria responses
  4. Essay question responses
  5. Two letters of recommendation based on the criteria (one letter from a peer teacher and another from someone in an administrative capacity who is familiar with the candidate's teaching skills)
  6. Teacher of the Year Publicity Form
  7. Professional head shot (JPEG at 300 dpi minimum)

Each of the above should be saved as a separate file (6 attachments total). PDF and Word files only.
